Expressive Kinetics

Project Type

Fabrication

Date

October 2025

This kinetic piece explores the boundary between digital sensing and physical response, transforming a familiar everyday object into an expressive kinetic sculpture that draws the user into an evolving narrative.

Built using p5.js, the system features an on-screen character whose behavior changes based on the proximity of a face detected through the laptop camera, creating a dynamic interaction between user and artifact. This digital input is translated into physical motion through a rack-and-pinion mechanism powered by a servo motor. The components were designed for fabrication, with parts laser-cut and 3D printed, allowing for precise assembly and integration of the mechanical and electronic systems.
